myrtle beach 2014, days 4 and 5: ripley’s aquarium and broadway at the beach

(May 15th and 16th)

It rained all day on Thursday, which actually worked out pretty well, because it gave us a “rest day”, which I think we all needed. The weather forecast had predicted a high chance of rain, so I had already purchased aquarium tickets to use that morning.

05152014collage1Ripley’s Aquarium was on a lot of “must-see” lists, so I’m glad we went… but I think it was definitely a one-time adventure. Kaya really liked it, but I found it just a little over-crowded and over-priced.

The shark tunnel was definitely the best part!

_MG_2561 She probably would’ve stayed and watched the fish all day if we let her! She especially loved the stingrays._MG_2569

On Friday, our last day, we made sure to get in some quality time at the beach. I knew it was our last chance to really play there, so I definitely tried to make the most of it. It was so bittersweet when the morning was over.05162014collage1 _MG_2583 Kaya still didn’t want to play in the waves after being knocked over on the second day, but she still had her share of water fun- in buckets! She kept asking us to refill ALL of them, and then she’d splash, clean seashells, and scoop the water out of them._MG_2588 After nap time, we headed to Broadway at the Beach. We were frugal and didn’t spend any money to do anything there, which was fine because we were content to just walk around. We did see some giant catfish though!_MG_2594 And of course there had to be some incredibly crazy photo from this trip…IMG_2595

We chose to have our last dinner out at the River City Cafe, which supposedly has the “best” burgers. The food was good, but I think we anticipated it to be a lot better than it actually was. It was just around the corner from our condo, so it was great that we could walk there.05162014collage2We took another walk to a souvenir shop to get a couple of t-shirts before we left the next morning. I definitely can’t wait to go back (hopefully in the near future)!

myrtle beach 2014, day 3: mini golf

(May 14th)

Kaya slept in until 9 am, which is obviously a great way to start any day of vacation! We went down to the shoreline, played in the waves and sand, and combed the beach for seashells. I actually attempted to get in a picture (for once!), but Kaya just wasn’t interested.

_MG_2498Kaya went down for a nap, and we went out on the balcony to enjoy some ice cream while listening to the waves rush in and out. I can’t even tell you how many cartons of ice cream we went through on this trip…Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetMyrtle Beach has several themed mini golf places, and this Jungle Safari one was about a half-mile walk from our condo. When Kaya woke up, we headed there for some fun!
05142014collage3 We had our own little caddy! We gave her her own ball, but somehow, she ended up carrying my ball and Michael’s club too, so we just had to share.05142014collage2 She was a trooper and climbed up and down so many stairs. It was definitely a good workout for a toddler!_MG_2515I usually like mini golf, but I really loved this course and would definitely go again or check out some of the other differently-themed places next time!
_MG_2516I knew Kaya would love the “animals”, and sure enough, the giraffes were her favorite. This one got several hugs (and she might’ve come super close to sticking that ball in a hole in the side of his head…)
05142014collage1

At dinnertime, Michael picked up some “Ultimate California Pizza” (yes, in South Carolina, apparently) for us to eat poolside. Mmmm. We actually ended up having enough for two dinners, which we definitely didn’t mind, since it was so good!Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetWe ended our day with a dance party in the living room… and maybe more ice cream after Kaya went to bed!

myrtle beach 2014, day 2: discovering the beach and a dolphin(less) tour

(May 13th)

On our first full day of vacation, we decided to explore the beach. We suited up, covered ourselves in half a ton of sunscreen, and made our way down there (along with a plethora of beach pails and shovels)!

Kaya was pretty uncertain of the sand at first (but I still got her to wave at me)!

05132014collage1 Before we left for our trip, I painted her toenails for the first time ever. Every time she’d remember about them, she’d get so excited, point at them and smile._MG_2393 Before long, she was ready to explore._MG_2403 There were some relatively large tidal pools on the beach that day, and once Kaya discovered them, she was determined to run through them almost all morning.5132014collage2 _MG_2416 _MG_2418 _MG_2435 _MG_2433 (This is a happy face!)_MG_2419 _MG_2417This series of pictures might be my favorite. She finally came down to the ocean to play, but when a wave of cool water came in, she wasn’t too happy. Another wave actually toppled her over (don’t worry, we were right there to pull her up), and after that, she didn’t want to play in the waves anymore.5132014collage3 We made sand castles… which really means that we were building castles just for Kaya to demolish._MG_2456 After about an hour and half on the beach, we headed inside for lunch and a nap. We were hoping that Kaya would get some good rest before our scheduled Dolphin Tour that afternoon, but she only slept for about thirty minutes or so._MG_2461When I planned our trip, going on a Dolphin Tour was at the top of my activities list. I was so excited to take a long boat ride and hopefully see some dolphins!
_MG_2487

Sadly, at this time of year, you have about a 50% chance of actually sighting any dolphins. The boat crew said they had seen quite a lot earlier that morning, but we were out of luck in the afternoon. They let down the fishing nets in an attempt to lure the dolphins near us, but still, nothing._MG_2472

We did see a pair of stingrays, though!_MG_2470Despite the missing dolphins, we still had a lot of fun on the boat. Our ride was about 2.5 hours long, and Kaya was a trooper through the whole thing. She had a blast just peeking out of the cabin and “surprising” me.
5132014collage4 _MG_2482 Waving from the second level!_MG_2473We headed back to the condo and cooked tacos for dinner, which turned out to be the perfect plan after a long day outside (I don’t think Kaya could have stayed happy through a meal out)! There’s nothing like ending the day with daddy cuddles and cartoons 🙂_MG_2490

myrtle beach 2014, day 1: traveling, our condo, and greek food

(May 12th)

I threw around hints about going to the beach for weeks. I looked at a million different places we could stay, and even “trained” Kaya to nod her head when I asked her if she wanted to go to Myrtle Beach.

But I never even booked the reservation. For multiple nights in a row, I’d get it all loaded up on the computer, and just stare at the “submit” button. I was just a little nervous to commit to anything, especially being 32-33 weeks pregnant at the time of our anticipated trip.

Lucky for me, Michael is a little less afraid of commitment and made that final click. We were officially going to the beach!

A month and a half later, we loaded up the car, dropped off Jax at the vet, and began the 5.5-hour-long drive.

It seemed like we had been counting down to this day for forever.

With a 19-month old and an 8-months-pregnant lady in the car, we definitely expected to stop along the way. To our surprise, we didn’t have to! We had our lunches packed, sang the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” about a million times, and looked at some new books to stay entertained. She did take a 30-minute nap, but that was all.
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset We rented a privately-owned condo for the week. We were so impressed with how spotless it was!_MG_2373Kaya actually ended up taking one of the beds for herself (the pack-and-play isn’t a favorite anymore, apparently), so it worked out really well that there were two.
_MG_2371 _MG_2375 There was a living room (with a sleeper sofa), and our own balcony._MG_2380 One of the main reasons I chose this place was the fact that it had a full kitchen. It was great to have a place to prepare and store breakfasts and lunches. We even cooked tacos one night!_MG_2381 We could see the ocean from our balcony, just off to the left! It was probably a two-minute walk to the beach, and we didn’t even have to cross the street 🙂_MG_2384The view off the balcony to the right:
_MG_2385 We headed down to the boardwalk with hopes of finding Greek food for dinner. Our vacation coincided with “Bike Week”, and Kaya wasn’t too sure about all the loud motorcycles at first (which is why she looks so uncertain in this picture)._MG_2387 We did find some amazing gyros- probably the best I’ve ever had in the States (and that’s saying something, because I’m picky about my Greek food)! They were made with real lamb- so authentic! Kaya probably ate half of mine on her own!_MG_2388

blog every day in may | day 24: my dream vacation

DIGITAL CAMERA(Santorini, Greece, 2009)

My junior year of college, I was blessed with the opportunity to study abroad. Our home base was in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, but my peers and I traveled around as much of Europe as our time and budgets would allow.

Exploring Europe truly changed the way I saw the world, and if I could go back, I would in a heartbeat. This time, I’d love to take Michael with me to show him all the amazing things I discovered before (and of course, explore some new places, too)! I loved vacationing as a family of three last week, but if we went to Europe, I think I’d rather have it be sans kids (especially since you do a lot of walking to really see everything).

Watching the sunset, indulging in the best food you’ve ever had, and riding four-wheelers all around a Grecian island? Sign me up (maybe in ten years or so…)!

utah’s hogle zoo

Are you ready for photo-overload? I just had a hard time narrowing it down when there were so many beautiful animals and fun moments with my two favorite people!hoglezoo20137After everyone else left Utah to head home to Virginia, it was just the three of us! With no scheduled events or time commitments, we wanted to do something fun together, just our little family. So, we chose the zoo, and I’m so glad we did. It was more than worth it for the memories we made.

(Michael’s wearing my sunglasses, and Kaya’s cuddling with this little puppy that the grandson of the couple we stayed with lent to her. I think she had a little crush on him, so she carried his puppy around a lot! Haha)hoglezoo20132 We were all pretty excited looking at the elephants!hoglezoo20131 _MG_8609 hoglezoo20136 _MG_8619 Bath time!_MG_8649 hoglezoo20134 Kaya loved the giraffes the most, but that could have just been because it was the animal we were able to get closest to._MG_8741 _MG_8740 _MG_8764 _MG_8694 I fell in love with the polar bear (which just happened to swim behind Michael as I was taking this picture)! That one on the top right is completely made of Legos!hoglezoo20135

Did you know that polar bears have special eyelids that act like sunglasses to protect their eyes from the light reflecting off the snow?_MG_8712 hoglezoo20133

We walked around for about 3 hours (something that would never happen in the Virginia humidity)! Kaya was a trooper and did so well, and passed out just before we left._MG_8772I’m so grateful for my own little family to enjoy days like these with 🙂

temple square

Last time I went to Utah, we actually visited Temple Square twice, but I loved it so much that I was adamant about going again. So, the evening before the wedding, we headed up there with Michael’s parents and grandpa.
_MG_7667 We toured the Conference Center (where the Church’s biggest meeting, General Conference, is held twice each year)!_MG_7648 _MG_7652 I’m not sure if you can tell by the photo… but this room is HUGE!_MG_7654 We got to sit and listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir practice for a bit. It was just as beautiful as ever!_MG_7663 You can actually get up on the roof of the building too._MG_7660 One thing I love about Temple Square is all the flowers… and someone else has started to notice them too (and wants to grab any that she can get her little fingers on)._MG_7687Don’t be fooled… this is a fussy face. She was so tired of the stroller._MG_7702_MG_7696 _MG_7694

We knew that our friend Ali, from our college days, is serving a mission there, so we tried to find her. Lucky for us, we did!_MG_7707_MG_7711 _MG_7714 _MG_7720 _MG_7722We love to see the temple.

home sweet home

We’re finally home from our trip out to Utah! The wedding was beautiful, we went some fun places, and made some great family memories. Hopefully I’ll be recapping everything and sharing my photos in the next few days, but here’s a little sneak peek (our first photo in front of the temple as a family of three)!_MG_7674

We took a redeye flight back to Virginia at 1 am on Tuesday morning, and then visited with my parents for the rest of the day before driving home. We finally drove into town around 11:30 pm. Our internal clocks still seem to be on Utah time (which is strange because after my last trip out west, I had no trouble at all adjusting either way).

on the last plane home!

A certain four-legged someone didn’t do so well without us home… Thankfully, Ben and Brittany (who were puppy-sitting) are probably two of the most patient people ever and went above and beyond to help us take care of Jax. We ended up boarding him at the vet (after he chewed through his crate and a few other things…), and I was so excited to go pick him up this afternoon. He is definitely happy to be home._MG_8811Kaya is also loving being back in her own space and playing with her own toys. This is the first time that we’ve come back from a trip where I can definitely say that she knows this is our home and is happy to be here. It’s so fun to watch her enjoy everything she loves again.

temple square in the evening

So because I’ve been a slowpoke awesome, I still haven’t blogged everything from my trip out west about two months ago! I’m hoping to maybe dedicate Thursdays to Utah recaps, but we’ll see how that goes. If you missed other posts about my trip, you can read them below:

We went to Temple Square twice on our trip. The first visit was at sunset, and the light was just perfect for walking around and taking some photos. I’ve wanted to see the Salt Lake temple ever since I first saw a picture of it about 6.5 years ago. It was even more beautiful in person, so I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves (although I do wish I’d had a lens hood back then, since there’s some awesome lens flare going on in these)._MG_4562 _MG_4564 _MG_4566 _MG_4572 _MG_4595 _MG_4592 _MG_4590

(Jordan River LDS temple)

After a week out in Utah, I’m finally back on the East coast! It was my first trip out west, and I certainly did enjoy myself. Utah definitely has its own beauty (hellooo Rocky Mountains!), but going somewhere else helped me realize that my heart really does belong to Virginia.

There will be a lot of fun posts coming up (as soon as I get the time to sort through my bajillion photos), like flying with a baby, all the temples we saw, hearing the Mormon Tabernacle choir (IN PERSON!!), and the engagement and wedding photos I shot while out there.

In other news, I’m starting this photo-a-day challenge. I’ve always wanted to do one, but I usually chicken out of it because I fear not being diligent enough to do it every day. Now I’m just going to go for it and see how it turns out!

Happy Friday everyone!
