five favorites (11/04)

Happy November! I’m going to try to do better with blogging this month, because I really do miss documenting more about our daily life and my kids’ shenanigans. We’re in the busiest season of our lives, though, so I’m trying to give myself some grace and understand that I just can’t do it all right now.

Here’s a little of what we’ve been up to!

ONE. We had a fun, memorable Halloween, but the girls enjoyed wearing several of their costumes from previous years for the entire week. They saved their “real” costumes for Halloween day (which will be another post). We had a lot of roaring and growling going on with a tiger and a dinosaur roaming around the house!
On another day, we had a quiet little giraffe in our midst.Kaya and Kaelyn also made some Halloween-themed art! They only asked me to spell “Halloween”, and they came up with the rest of this on their own. I just love these little ghosts. TWO. We’ve been having some fun at Kangaroo Kids the past few weeks! It’s been great to go back after an entire summer off, and the girls couldn’t have been more excited than they were on that first day we walked in. It’s also been really fun to watch Nella enjoying it more and more now that she’s a little older.Best friends. THREE. We went to the “Bug Fest” a couple of weekends ago, where we learned all about various types of insects (butterflies, honeybees, tarantulas, and cockroaches, to name a few). The girls were the very most excited about holding butterflies at the end of the event! I wasn’t so sure I wanted to hold one, but Michael encouraged me to, and it was actually pretty cool! Nella even held one for just a split second, which wasn’t long enough to get a picture.Butterfly buddies! (Eve was over it by this point!) Our other favorite station was learning about honeybees. We saw a real hive and even spotted the Queen!FOUR. The humidity has died down (finally!), and I’ve been enjoying some longer runs on the weekend! I’ve seen my running pace pick up drastically, and I’m already dreaming about maybe doing a half marathon next spring. This was my best postpartum run to date. It feels so good to feel more like my normal, non-pregnant running self again!FIVE. We enjoyed listening to General Conference at the beginning of October! Gaining inspiration and guidance for my daily life is something I will always hold dear. I participated in the social media fast recommended by President Nelson, and I learned a lot about myself, how and why I [should] use social media, as well as how it affects me day to day.

We brought back our old tradition of taking a group photo on Sunday morning!Of course we had to be silly.Michael might have taken multiple naps… but I’m still just grateful for this time with my family.Happy Sunday!

picnicking with the grandparents

Two weekends ago (see how I am always behind here?), my in-laws came up for a visit! Their favorite local campground had finally opened up for the season, and they were ready to enjoy the great outdoors… along with paying a visit to their favorite granddaughters, of course! 🙂_MG_1469 We all did some relaxing and movie-watching at our apartment, but the real fun (and where I took the most photos) was from our “cookout” lunch and walk down at the campground. It was quite windy, so we ended up eating in their new camper. Hot dogs and homemade mac and cheese, with s’mores for dessert (there’s no s’more picture obviously, because who has time for that when deliciousness is right under your nose?)!
_MG_1470This is my peanut-butter-sandwich kid. She’d rather have a PB&J than almost any other food… except for maybe Chinese. Otherwise, it’s her go-to choice, and I think she’d eat it for every lunch and dinner every day if I let her._MG_1472We went on a little walk through the woods. We showed Kaya that she could pick the dandelions… and now she wants to pick every flower, everywhere. She had quite a collection at the end of the day (and I think they were all in Grandma’s pocket)!_MG_1476 I love these people._MG_1485 Don’t be fooled… Kaelyn probably rode on Daddy’s shoulders for about two minutes. She wanted to walk the whole way, all by herself, even when there were tree roots growing in the middle of her path. She’s slow, but persistent, and she walked almost all of the trail with those two little legs._MG_1487 _MG_1496Of course, Kaya got some good swinging action. I think she might have her grandparents wrapped around her finger (quite literally)…
_MG_1500Later that night, we had a tumultuous wind storm- gusts were up to 60 mph! We lost power for about 13 hours, so sadly, we weren’t able to watch much of General Conference on Sunday. Mom and Dad Irwin did cook (in the camper) a special breakfast, and brought it inside for us. Bacon, eggs, sausage, and cinnamon buns. Mmmm.
_MG_1540 Anything sweet is her favorite, so you can guess how much she loved the cinnamon rolls!_MG_1541 And what would a grandparent visit be without some sweet kisses? I love how much my girls love them._MG_1455 _MG_1460

conference weekend

We had a fantastic weekend, filled with plenty of family time… and RAIN! I had a nice, chilly run in the rain on Saturday morning, but I’m so glad the worst of the weather skipped over us.

Friday afternoon, we walked over to the grocery store, and I let Kaya pick out a mini pumpkin to paint. She asked to paint it all day long, but there just wasn’t time after we had naps and dinner. On Saturday morning, she was more than ready to get started! I have never seen anyone so excited to paint a pumpkin! 🙂_MG_9404 She really did a fantastic job, if you ask me._MG_9403We also enjoyed watching General Conference! I love hearing from our modern-day Prophet and apostles. There were so many inspiring quotes, but this was a favorite of mine:12108996_10153551990901550_540695057927460055_nMichael went to the priesthood session late on Saturday night. He came home with the brightest flowers I’ve ever seen in his hand- a surprise for me! He chose these for me because he felt they reflect my “colorful and energetic personality” and wanted to make me smile. Awww. _MG_9415 We all slept in on Sunday morning (that’s no small miracle around here), and I whipped up some donuts for a special breakfast. Kaya insisted on putting the sprinkles on by herself!_MG_9408 We enjoyed more of Conference cuddled up on the couch together. I love these crazy cuties._MG_9421Lest you think we’ve become too serious… _MG_9427 Grandma Gina and Grandpa Skip came into town late Sunday afternoon, and they had some birthday presents for Kaya. She was so excited for it to be “her birthday” again and is over-the-moon in love with this Baby Margaret (from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood)._MG_9447Kaya ended the weekend by making up her own song about brushing your teeth:

she made up her own teeth-brushing song! I'd say she has some talent 🙂 10.04.2015

conference weekend

General Conference happens twice a year, and I have to say, those are some of my very favorite weekends! Who wouldn’t want to sleep in, indulge in some home-cooked breakfast, cuddle up on the couch with your family, and have uplifting gospel messages broadcasted right into your living room?

This cute girl was pretty excited for her first conference. _MG_4468Actually, she’s just happy (almost) all the time. But she definitely enjoyed all the extra snuggles.

We kicked off Sunday morning with some homemade chocolate-chip pumpkin pancakes! I might be a little obsessed…Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset I had already made a bunch of them before anyone else in the house was awake. Kaya came out of her room and immediately got excited (she also tried to call them “cupcakes”…)!_MG_4475

Here’s one of my many favorite quotes from this conference:neillfmarriottoct2014quote - Copy

By the end of the weekend, we were all pretty tired, and might have passed out during the last session…Processed with VSCOcam with lv02 presetI just love the extra time we get to spend together as a family, and I definitely came away feeling inspired to make a few changes and improvements. I’m grateful that we can learn, grow, become better, and feel the Savior’s love!

conference weekend… aka we ate a lot of breakfast

This weekend was our church’s General Conference, which means that we get to stay home and listen to a whole lot of inspiring talks all weekend long. If you missed it or want to listen to any of the talks, you can get them all here!

General Conference weekend usually means that we cook a special breakfast. Pregnancy cravings must’ve gotten to me, because I made breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday. Baby wanted protein, and these German pancakes (they have six eggs in them. SIX.) definitely hit the spot. Way better than regular pancakes!

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset We had Ben and Brittany over for brunch before the session!Processed with VSCOcam Kaya might look like she was about to dig in… but she wouldn’t even try them.Processed with VSCOcam with a4 presetOn Sunday morning, I made these cinnamon roll bites. Unlike the pancakes, Kaya ate a bunch of them! They’re a lot easier than regular cinnamon rolls, and just as tasty.
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset I love sharing this special time with my little family (Kaya was actually watching conference when we took this picture)! It is so hard to believe that at the next conference in October, we’ll have two sweet girls to cuddle and love.Processed with VSCOcam with a5 presetI’m so thankful that families are forever 🙂 I’ll end this post with one of my very favorite quotes from President Uctdorf’s talk:

Hopefully Conference gave you the spiritual boost you needed! Happy Monday 🙂

waffles, conference, and a whole bunch of crazy people

As I posted over the weekend, we spent Saturday and Sunday relaxing and watching General Conference. I was also craving chocolate-chip waffles… Luckily, I have a super-awesome husband who tends to want to eat the same things I do, so I put him to work in the kitchen he graciously whipped up these whole-wheat waffles on Sunday morning.
_MG_0013 He kinda messed up the first one (just a little)!_MG_0015 Jax didn’t care what the waffles looked like because they smelled heavenly. Newsflash for my dog: chocolate kills._MG_0021 Much better 🙂_MG_0023 Baby Bird slept through all our clamoring in the kitchen, so she had her waffle (which was actually 1/4 of one) for lunch. That’s the smile of one happy girl!_MG_0038

We took a family picture, which is something we try to do on or around each conference weekend (every six months)._MG_0053In the afternoon, we had friends over to watch the last session. We had a potluck dinner- chicken ‘n dumplings, rice, veggies, and my favorite homemade brownies topped with ice cream for dessert. It doesn’t get any better than that!_MG_0059 I love all these crazy people and I’m so grateful to share these memories with them. (PS- the babies have the best expressions… and Jax looks pretty insane too)._MG_0060

general conference

This weekend is our church’s “General Conference”, in which we all gather (most of us around our televisions) to listen to the inspiring and uplifting messages of our prophet and apostles.

Conference buoys up my spirit in a way that nothing else can.

In a world full of sorrow, sin, shortcomings and stumbling blocks, Conference is incredibly reassuring. There are at least 15 million other people out there just like me who want to follow Christ, strengthen their families, and improve the way they live their lives.1277961_10151904766006550_1044973683_o

The best part is that anyone can watch General Conference. You don’t need to be a member of the church. Hey, you don’t even need to get off your couch or out of your pajamas.

Check it out here tomorrow at 12 pm and 4 pm EST.

Happy weekend everybody!

conference weekend

This weekend was our church’s General Conference! I heard someone recently describe it as “self-improvement television”, which is a pretty neat way to explain it to anyone who hasn’t heard of it before. There were so many uplifting talks, and one of the recurring themes was “service to our fellow men”. Serving others can help us find joy and develop a closer relationship with God. (I’m finding that motherhood is kind of like one GIANT act of service, but I hope that I can look for ways to help other people, too).

So because church didn’t start until noon, we got to “sleep in” a little. After you have a baby, the definition of sleeping in definitely changes!

While Michael went to the priesthood session of Conference on Saturday night, Baby Bird and I got snuggly on the couch. We even listened to some classical Christmas music (I know, I know, some of you reading this are shaking your heads, since it isn’t even Halloween yet)! In my defense, Kaya LOVES instrumental music and will usually calm down pretty quickly when she hears it. So… why NOT use it as excuse to celebrate my favorite time of year a little early?

Kaya also had her regular tummy-time… and rolled herself over again! She has done it four times now. We might have to start baby-proofing sooner than we think!

We even got to visit with our friends, play Blokus, and bake cookies!

general conference!

This weekend was The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints‘ General Conference! It only comes twice a year, so I really look forward to it. Conference can be an inspiring and uplifting experience for anyone, whether you’re a member of the church or not!

There were definitely a lot of talks about devoting time to strengthening the family. President Boyd K. Packer said, “Family time is sacred time, and should be protected and respected. We urge our members to show devotion to their families.” I think his talk may have been my favorite. I’ve made a goal for Michael and I to do better at holding family home evenings and regular family scripture study.

I also really wanted to take a family photo (including the piggies!), so Michael humored me and dragged the tripod, chair and pigs outside. I think this might be a nice tradition to hold every conference!
