love jar

It was 9:45 pm, and I was in the kitchen, mixing spices for the brine my pork loin needed to soak in overnight. I had used the very last of the salt, and climbed up on a chair to look higher in the cabinet for the other spices I needed (yep, short people never get to stop climbing to reach stuff). I found everything, and then began to step off the chair. Before I knew what happened, my entire container of spices was pummeled to the floor, spilling little grains of flavor in every nook of the kitchen. Michael stood in the doorway, and as I yelled “Nooooo!” like some over-dramatic actress, he was already on the way out the door to buy me some more salt.

Most of my blog posts are spent gushing over Kaya, and while she is more than gush-worthy… I think my husband deserves some recognition, too._MG_6425

He works from nearly the moment he wakes up in the morning all the way until bedtime. Sure, he enjoys software development and being a nerd (which is a term of endearment in our home), but he does it for Kaya and me. He gives everything he’s got and then some when it comes to providing for our family.

He never complains about cuddling with me at night, even though he would rather be happily asleep on his stomach and have more space than the one-third of the bed I leave for him. (Yes… I’m the bed-hogger. But he’s the blanket-stealer!)

When I came in late from my morning run last week, guilt consumed me because I knew it was my fault Michael had missed the bus. He didn’t point fingers or blame me.

Kaya had more wake-ups than usual one night last week, and when she was ready to start her day at the extra-early hour of 5 am, I just couldn’t pry my tired body out of bed. Michael got up with her so that I could sleep for just a bit longer.IMG_20130526_213932

He’s been taking care of our vacationing friends’ dog every morning and night just so that I don’t have to stress out about how to get that done around Kaya’s nap/bedtime schedule.

And Michael always encourages me to use my talents. Whether it’s photography, baking, cake-decorating, sewing, playing music or writing, he always compliments me and pushes me to keep trying.

This year, our stake president asked us to make a “love jar”. The whole point of the jar is to recognize and write acts of service that you observe others doing. I’ve found that as I write down the selfless things Michael does, I start to notice even more things he does that I might have otherwise missed. And with each act of service, my love and appreciation for him grows more and more._MG_6418

nibbling

(written June 11th)

Kaya is almost nine months old, and for the most part, she is still not really interested in solid food. I’m not really worried about it, especially since her pediatrician said that as long as she’s nursing, she’s fine. Still, I would like to see her eat a little something, and last week, we had two days where she actually swallowed a few bites!

We tried applesauce (with a little cinnamon), peanut butter, and corn. Peanut butter is definitely the favorite out of those options! She does like Cheerios, so she had some of those, too.

_MG_6304 _MG_6312 _MG_6310 _MG_6314 _MG_6322 She was so ready to get out of the chair by this point!_MG_6324Yay for a few (baby) steps in the right direction!

a weekend with grandma

My mom came up to visit this weekend, and stayed from Thursday until Sunday morning. She hasn’t been here for awhile, and it’s been a couple months since she last saw Kaya, so she was definitely excited to spend time with her grandbaby!

_MG_6435We kicked off the long weekend by meeting Karl’s girlfriend, Amber! We had a great time laughing and playing Mario Kart. I’ve never been great at video games, but somehow I raced worse than I probably ever have. Oops._MG_6380

Kaya seriously LOVES her Uncle Karl. Two peas in a pod!_MG_6416 _MG_6411 Grandma even helped Kaya ride her rocking horse for the first time ever! She loved it so much that later on, she even crawled all the way up to it on her own!_MG_6387

We were really hoping for some nice weather so we could all go and enjoy the pool. Sadly, most of the weekend was dreary and just a little too chilly for swimming. When it finally seemed like the rain was subsiding, we went out for a walk… only to get wet about half a mile in! It was still fun to get outside.

(Kaya thought it was hilarious if I walked in front of the stroller!)

Jax and my mom became instant buddies! He must know that she has a Border Collie mix, too._MG_6396

Kaya had some fun on the swings, and we enjoyed a little too much Dairy Queen, twizzlers, Dunkin Donuts, and cookie bars. We also did a little sale shopping at The Children’s Place and had dinner at Macado’s one night.

8 goals for june

I’m linking up again for Tuesday Topics, and this week is about making goals. Some of these goals might seem a bit easy, but it’s better to have a small, manageable goal than a big-intimidating-monster of a goal. So here goes, in no particular order:

1. Do at least one strength-training or ab workout per week. I am so diligent when it comes to running, but I can’t even tell you the last time I lifted weights or worked my core. Even once a week is better than never!

2. Read a book. I’m always reading articles or blogs on the internet… but it’s been awhile since I finished an entire book.

3. Be more patient. This mostly refers to being patient with myself. I’m trying to balance being a wife, having a newly-mobile baby, training a puppy, keeping the house clean, photography, church service, etc… and it can be easy to become frustrated with myself for not always knowing how to handle certain situations or even just balance my time._MG_6217

4. Plan at least one real date. We are too good at just watching a movie and eating ice cream and counting that as a date on most weekends.

5. Read the scriptures earlier in the day. I read every single day, but sometimes I put it off until the end of the night, and by that time, my brain is too tired to get much out of it.

6. Declutter. I know we both have clothes in the closet that we can donate, and papers that can be recycled or filed away.

7. Go to bed earlier. This goal is probably the one I am most likely to fail at. We have always had this awful habit of staying up until we just can’t stay awake. Going to bed at midnight when you have a baby just doesn’t cut it anymore. If I can get in bed before 11 pm, I’ll call it a success, but I’d really like to be asleep by 10:30.

8. Practice piano for 30 minutes per week. I’ve started learning to play, and then stopped, and started, and stopped. I just need to try a little more.

first swim

On Saturday, we finally took Kaya to the pool for the first time! I was so excited to dress her up in her adorable, ruffly swimsuit and see how she’d do in the water._MG_6239 Could her chubby cheeks be any cuter? She was smiling as Michael descended into the pool._MG_6243 It was a little cold at first (it even took me a few minutes to get in)._MG_6247 But once she got acclimated, she actually had a great time!_MG_6251 _MG_6261 _MG_6249 She also made friends with a little toddler girl- anytime she saw her, Kaya just started beaming! I think that’s why she was smiling in these last two photos._MG_6270 _MG_6272And now that we’ve gone swimming, it officially feels like SUMMER! 🙂
